day 29: Winefail 2011

Winefail 2011
Took a wine class at New York Vintners on Sunday. The class was a little weird, but the wines were a delight! I learned some interesting things about tasting... and about how to score free cheese from friendly wine store owners :)

day 28: Picture Show

Picture Show
Movie night in Cobble Hill. Went to see Blue Valentine. Not bad, though I didn't love it as much as my movie-going companions. I found Ryan Gosling's character to be equally annoying and charming, and Michelle William's character was kind of one note the whole movie. That little girl was great, though.

day 27: Guinness for Strength

Guinness for Strength
First week of school has been a success! In anticipation of all the work I'll have to start doing next week, this week seems to have ended up at the bottom of a glass. (Ok, a few glasses.)

Back to business Monday. Til then... Guinness. Bottoms up.

day 26: Wet Snow, Dry Martini

Wet Snow, Dry Martini
After NYU closed school for the day, I spent the afternoon trudging through wet piles of snow in search of the ultimate snow boots. Followed by martinis at the W courtesy of the lovely Jen. The rest is a blur, as it goes when we visit Jen at the bar...

day 25: Seward in the Snow

Seward in the Snow
A snowy William Seward statue at Madison Square Park . An appropriate photo, as I was on my way to have coffee with my former history professor from CMU. Granted, I didn't know who Seward was before looking him up (I studied the history of rock n' roll...) but I bet my professor knows who he is!

day 24: Lazy Day with Lazy Cat

Lazy Day with Lazy Cat
Spent the day with the little monster, catching up on school business and generally putting my life back in order. Managed to do some laundry, write half of my 5-minute screenplay for film class and clean the apartment! Hendrix just sat and watched while licking himself.

day 23: Steelerstitious

Steelerstitious
Apparently my good luck Steelers shrinky dink is still working!!

Let's hope we can put a ring on it.

day 22: Food Television Magic

Food Television Magic
Behind the scenes magic of making a food show... 18 hour shoot day. I am officially done! Hope the pilot goes to series. Hope I will have found another way to make a living by the time it does ;)

Unfortunately I had to work through the Steelers/Jets game, but I got up to the minute updates of the Steelers VICTORY!! (Celebratory photo to come.)

day 21: The Wrong Side of a Window

The Wrong Side of a Window
The view from our production office as the sun sets on Manhattan. Down below are happy people enjoying their Saturday night. 6am call time tomorrow. Two alarms set for 4:45am. I'm ready for this shoot to be over!

day 20: Work Perks

Work Perks
Working for the Food Network does have its perks. AKA Raspberry Lemon Coconut Cream Cake. The diet starts Monday.

day 19: Power Breakfast

Power Breakfast
Pulling the hours to prep for a shoot requires strategic breakfast choices. My power shake - super-greens mix, almond milk, frozen blackberries and ground flax seed. Top of the morning to ya.

day 18: All Work and No Play

All Work and No Play
All work and no play makes Joyce take dull pictures... Had an early morning shoot today for Chopped, followed by a late night at the office for the food network pilot. I managed to snap this one picture as the van pulled away from our shoot location today.

This is kinda how I feel... a little off-kilter. I am looking forward to sleep.

day 17: Winter Reading

Winter Reading
Spring semester starts on Monday and I've barely made a dent in my self-assigned winter break reading list... It seems I have vastly overestimated my time management skills. (shock!)

I guess I'd better hit the books.

day 16: Highline

Highline
Went to a party at the Highline Ballroom last night and was naturally most interested in taking pictures of the disco ball above my head. Why are they so pretty? I need to get one of these for my apartment.

day 15: Epicuriosity

Epicuriosity
Spent a mildly productive/mildly lazy Sunday at home today avoiding the cold. Inspired by this desserts pilot I am working on for the Food Network, I decided to improvise an Epicurious recipe for Crispy Coconut Rice Pudding. It came out quite good, if I do say so myself.

Do I really have to go to work tomorrow?

day 14: Black & Yellow

Black & Yellow
do it big.

day 13: Grassroots Tavern Annual

Grassroots Tavern Annual
Made the annual pilgrimage to Grassroots Tavern for Elyssa's birthday. Debauchery ensued. A good time was had by all.

day 12: Flying Art

Flying Art

So, one of the things I am learning about being a successful photographer is that you have to remember to take photos. I was running late to Jen's solo show and completely forgot to take some good pictures when I got there. I did manage to snap this one on our way out - probably one of my favorite pieces in the show!

day 11: Tribeca Winds

Tribeca Winds
Not enough snow for a snow day... just a slushy, windy tribeca night.

day 10: Snow Blues

Snow Blues
Here's hoping for a snow day.

day 9: Crash Mansion

Crash Mansion

Very cool Burlesque show at Crash Mansion. Sparkly T & A!

day 8: Goodnight Moon

Goodnight Moon

Spent the day running errands in the neighborhood. Caught this cute little shot on my way home of the crescent moon overhead. According to the internet it's a waxing crescent, 28% full.

day 7: Like a Record, Baby

Like a Record, Baby

Supercool record player at my friend's party! Apparently focusing after 4 whiskeys is difficult. I love the red & blue light reflections, though.

day 6: Nolita House

Nolita House
Dinner at Nolita House on a cold Friday night. I really like those lanterns they have along the wall.

day 5: Smoke Rings

Smoke Rings
At a hookah bar in the East Village. My smoke rings weren't quite as successful. Nor was my attempt to take a picture of smoke rings. But I sort of caught one in this shot...

day 4: Grocery

Grocery

The week has been a little slow for me as far as exciting photo-ops go. Purchasing this avocado was the highlight of my day. Breakfast tomorrow is looking up. Is it Friday yet?

day 3: Token

token
A little holiday gift arrived via Washington D.C. I like the necklace a lot, but I looove the octopus bag it came in! All in all an excellent gift :) Had to light this one with a bare (environmentally friendly) 30W bulb, since two of the three lightbulbs in my living room ceiling fixture are burnt out. Not a bad little makeshift studio arrangement.

day 2: Canal Street

Canal Street

Caught this little self-portrait photo op on the commute home today. I thought the symmetry was cool, and only noticed after I took the shot that my reflection was right smack in the middle of it.

And I decided to change the blog template again. Sheesh. The other one had a couple of glitches that I couldn't resolve. So, here we are. I have sifted through so much html in the past few days, I think I am officially done. This one should do just fine. And I got it to match the website! (shameless plug) Definite progress.

day 1: Happy New Year

Happy New Year (First photo!)

It was quite an ordeal getting the blog set-up. I think I tried about 600 templates before settling on this one. That should motivate me to stay on task. Happy 2011.

Technically, this photo was taken in the first few hours of January 1st (that's my new year's dress in the background) but I think it's an appropriate start to the project. So, we'll start here.
